Introducing Felipe

Travel has been in Felipe's blood for as long as he can remember. As a kid growing up in Brazil he always dreamt of visiting off-the-beaten-track destinations in Asia and Africa, and of exploring more of Latin America. After studying tourism management at university, Felipe moved to the UK to do a master’s degree in marketing – and never really looked back. He's been working in the travel industry for over 15 years, working in marketing and PR for luxury hotels, tourist boards, airlines, and tour operators, and has been lucky enough to have experienced over 65 countries, recently managing to conquer his 7th continent – exploring the vastness of Antarctica, which he describes as a life-changing experience!

Felipe's Top Tips

  • Put your camera down from time to time. The scenery and wildlife are so amazing that it can be hard to turn off your devices, but make sure you also give yourself the time to experience these places in their full glory, and not only through a tiny screen.
  • Come with a sense of adventure! This is an expedition of a lifetime and it will reward you with some lifelong memories, but the weather can change quickly and so being adaptable is important for you to make the most of your voyage.
  • Try new things – you are in one of the most remote and unique places in the world, so make the most of it. Do the polar plunge, hike to the top of that mountain, and never miss an opportunity to get out of the ship! You won’t regret it!

Your Favourite Polar Travel Experience...

On our very first landing in Portal Point, after exploring and walking around, I was able to sit on the top of a mountain and just relax for an hour. Watching an Antarctica sunset, surrounded by icebergs and amazing wildlife whilst the snow was falling, was one of those powerful ‘pinch me' travel moments. I had finally conquered my 7th continent and I felt so privileged to have that experience – it's a moment I will never forget!

What Do You Recommend Taking With You On a Polar Cruise?

A sense of adventure is the number one thing. But of course, do your research and come prepared with the right gear – quite basic thermals are fine and four layers should be more than enough as it’s an active trip and you get to exercise quite a bit. Also bring a spare battery for your camera, as you will need it!

Where to next, and why?

I’ve always been fascinated with Greenland and the Inuit community, so I'm hoping that will be my next stop in the Polar Regions. I would of course love to see the mighty polar bears in Svalbard too, which I’m sure will be another once-in-a-lifetime travel moment.
