Ever wondered what activities and experiences might be on offer on an expedition cruise to the Antarctic? Whether it’s a taste of adventure on land, or on the water, when you cruise with AE Expeditions there’s a whole host of incredible experiences to get stuck into when you venture to the polar regions, such as the polar plunge, which, exactly as the name suggests, is not for the faint of heart!

Below we’ve chosen five of our personal favourites, which ones will you be trying?

Snorkelling

It may spring to mind as a holiday activity to enjoy in tropical waters, surrounded by colourful fish, but did you know it’s a popular experience in the polar regions as well? It’s a great way to get up close and personal with seals as they rest on ice floes, as well as an opportunity to see penguins swimming. But perhaps the most impressive thing about snorkelling in Antarctica is seeing how a huge iceberg looks below the surface!

Guided Hikes

Guided hikes are the perfect way to get up-close and personal with the polar landscapes. AE’s experts will take you into the white wilderness to discover flora and fauna, vast colonies of penguins, and even take you to the best spots for that spectacular vista you’re going to want to photograph!

Snowshoeing

Dating back to almost 6,000 years ago, the original snowshoe was often made of animals, most notably hare, nowadays they’re much more modern and help you to glide over the snow with ease. They’re designed to spread the weight of the user so that you travel largely on top of the snow rather than sinking into it. Something that has to be experienced when travelling to Antarctica with AE.

Kayaking

This could perhaps be our ultimate activity! Imagine bobbing along in a kayak in the pristine, icy waters when a whale breaches the surface. Experiences like this are really unique to Antarctica. They’re great for exploring wild coastlines and getting a closer look at seals basking on ice floes. When you kayak on an AE expedition cruise, you’ll paddle anywhere between 5 to 15 kilometres, that’s roughly 2 to 4 hours per excursion, ample time to spot many incredible sights from the waterline.

Diving

AE actually offered the first-ever dive trip to Antarctica back in 1998, so they are true pioneers in polar scuba diving. It’s the perfect opportunity to go into a deeper world, below the ice, which few have been lucky enough to witness. AE’s expert dive guides have over 20 years of experience and will be able to bring you the experience of a lifetime.

These activities and many more are available when you journey to the polar regions with AE Expeditions. Their highly experienced activity guides are worldwide experts in their field, ensuring you the most fulfilling experiences when you travel with AE.
