The Ross Sea is one of the least visited regions of Antarctica but is home to some of the Antarctic’s most iconic sites. The few expedition cruises that make it here are presented with the unique opportunity to see four historic huts from the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, each the frozen remains of an iconic expedition led by Borchgrevink, Scott and Shackleton.
This corner of the vast white continent is also home to the American, New Zealand and Italian research bases which you will have the chance to visit. The opportunities to see wildlife are second to none with crabeater seals, wandering albatross, emperor and Adélie penguins and leopard seals inhabiting the region.
Enjoy the barren beauty of the McMurdo Dry Valleys where the low humidity and surrounding mountains prevent the flow of glaciers; visit the Ross Ice Shelf which James Clark Ross first mapped and described as ‘The Barrier’ remarking, “Well, there's no more chance of sailing through that than through the cliffs of Dover”. On some voyages, you board the ship’s helicopter and swoop low over the crisp white ice. Whatever you do, this is sure to be the most memorable experience of your life.
