Named after the iconic Norwegian explorer and Nobel prize winner Fridtjof Nansen, the MS Fridtjof Nansen is the second of two new hybrid expedition ships in its class. Due for completion in 2019, together with its sister ship the MS Roald Amundsen they will be among the most sustainable ships in the world. The ship has the capacity for 530 passengers.
What makes the Fridtjof Nansen so special is that it is one of the first to feature a hybrid propulsion system that will not only reduce its fuel consumption but will show the world that large hybrid ships are possible. The new Rolls Royce engines are expected to reduce total fuel consumption by up to 20 percent and will be able to sail under electric propulsion for half an hour, the result will be a smooth and silent sailing experience unlike anything else operating in the polar regions today.
The MS Fridtjof Nansen makes innovative use of natural Scandinavian materials including granite, oak, birch and wool. These materials are used throughout the ship's stylish suites, cabins and social areas.
All cabins enjoy outside views, allowing you to see the mesmerising polar landscapes as they pass by your window. The ships large size and the leisurely pace is perfect for letting you take your time and enjoy this once in a lifetime experience.
The Nansen Science centre is the hub of your expedition; The centre is kitted out with state of the art technology, this is far from your tradition cruise ship theatre. There are high tech touch screens, scientific equipment and it will be the perfect forum for guests to meet with the expedition staff and develop their understanding of the Polar regions.
Like the MS Roald Amundsen, there will be three restaurants namely the Aune main lounge, the Fredheim and Lindstrøm.
