The expedition team welcomes you aboard the ship before sailing to the northern islands. The Orkney archipelago is a pristine location for wildlife and a treasure for archaeology and history. You will admire fascinating Neolithic sites, Viking relics and World War 2 era fortifications. The team invites you to further exploration in either Zodiacs or kayaks. Further north, the Shetland Islands are remarkable for their exceptional nature reserves and archaeological sites such as the complex Stone, Bronze and Iron Age settlement of Jarlshof.

When crossing the Barents Sea, you will arrive at Bear Island and perhaps encounter some of the polar bears arriving from the expanding pack ice in the winter. The island is a favourite nesting ground for fulmars, kittiwakes, guillemots and gulls. You will then explore the pristine South Spitsbergen National Park before you enter the Hornsund’s fjord in search for the reindeer, ringed and bearded seal, the elusive beluga whale and, of course, the majestic polar bear.
You disembark in Longyearbyen and bid farewell to the expedition team and the friends you shared this extraordinary voyage with.
The Greg Mortimer is due for completion in 2019. It is named after the Australian polar explorer, mountaineer and Aurora founder, Greg Mortimer.
This new ship marks a new direction for Aurora, as it is their first purpose-built Polar Expedition ship. The vessel features a state-of-the-art 'x-bow design', which has a piercing effect on smaller waves, making for a much smoother voyage.
