When Do You Want To Go?
A trip to Svalbard is always a magical affair and the undisputed King of the region has to be the Polar Bear. On this extended 11-day cruise with G Adventures you will have an even greater chance to encounter this majestic creature. No one knows where the Polar Bear will appear, it might be close by from the security of your Zodiac, or further away on top of the ice pack hunting for seals.
Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. The main islands are Spitsbergen, Nordaustlandet, Edgeøya, Barentsøya and multitude of small islands. Your expedition will mainly take place on the West side of Spitsbergen Island, but if time and ice conditions allow then you may circumnavigate around the island to see even more. You may encounter Whales, Walrus, Seals, Arctic Foxes, Reindeer and a huge variety of birdlife. The scenery of the archipelago also varies, from fjords with beautiful glaciers and floating ice to dramatic cliff faces home to some of the incredible birdlife.
Back on-board your ship, the G Expedition, will offer you a home-from-home. Enjoy comfortable cabins each with private bathrooms, and a nice range of public spaces. Single travellers are also well catered for as you can be matched with another traveller and share your cabin without any supplement. The triple and quad cabins offer even better value prices too!
Arrive in the land of the midnight sun in Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen’s capital. The sun will hover low in the sky and cast a magical yellow glow onto the coastline. Embark your ship in the afternoon.
Travel around Spitsbergen and take advantage of local ice and weather conditions. You will spend 9 nights exploring what this region has to offer. Visit ice-sculpted fjords with breathtaking mountain scenery, and glaciers crashing into the sea. Spend time exploring pack ice edges in search of polar bears hunting seals. At one or more of the stops, it's also possible to encounter Svalbard's Arctic fox and the region's unique reindeer. On the island, the tundra shows its beauty and you can see Svalbard poppy growing and blooming. It is the symbolic flower of Svalbard.
During your time exploring you can expect up to 2 landings per day, organised by the ships experienced expedition crew. Safety is always the number one priority and each landing includes dedicated staff who stand watch for the regions greatest predator - the polar bear. Don't worry if one comes near you can hop back into the safety of your Zodiac and enjoy watching this majestic creature from the water.
There is also the option to join a kayaking group and get you close to the natural environment. This activity has an extra charge but speak to your Polar Routes Travel Specialist for more information.
