Day 13: Disembark in Longyearbyen
Your Greenland and Spitsbergen expedition begins in Longyearbyen. This small coal-mining town turned gateway to Arctic exploration offers visitors a look into life beyond the Arctic Circle. Explore fascinating museums, get to know the locals, and gear up for your expedition. Transfer from Longyearbyen to the G Expedition for a late afternoon expedition.
Spend several days exploring the massive fjord system of Northeast Greenland National Park. Sail through and land on some of the most spectacular fjords in the world while exploring rarely visited glaciers, bays and inlets. You may spot orca, humpback or minke whales, so keep a keen lookout. Be immersed in the full experience with educational lectures by expedition staff.
After several days traversing the far reaches of Greenland's awe-inspiring wilderness, visit the community of Ittoqqortoomiit. Although small and far from other inhabited towns, the vibrance of life here is evident in the brightly coloured buildings, the eager Greenlandic husky puppies and the warmth of the people who call it home.
Take advantage of local ice and weather conditions to explore the Northwest Spitsbergen National Park, one of those rare places on Earth blessed with both an awe-inspiring landscape and compelling history. The Svalbard archipelago sits halfway between Norway and the North Pole, at the intersection of the Arctic Ocean, the Norwegian Sea and the Greenland Sea. Spend these days in search of the elusive polar bear as they hunt seals. Look out for Svalbard's unique subspecies of reindeer plus arctic foxes.
Disembark this morning and transfer to the airport, or to the Radisson Blu Polar hotel, depending on your flight time.
With a maximum of 134 passengers, the G Expedition provides an intimate, small-ship cruising experience with a focus on exploration. The ship was completely refurbished in 2009 and has been converted into a perfect polar explorer with an ice-strengthened hull, stabilisers , large observation decks and a fleet of zodiacs ready to get you onto the ice. It also features a heated mudroom which ensures extra comfort when preparing for your excursions.
