King George Island, the largest South Shetland Island, is the gateway to Antarctica, with over 10 nations having year-round or summer-only scientific research stations. The island is home to diverse wildlife, including Adelie, Chinstrap, Gentoo Penguins, Weddell, and leopard seals, and skuas and southern giant petrels. Named after King George III, the island has been claimed by Chile and Argentina, but remains part of British Antarctic Territory. The warm climate attracts a large bird population.
