King George Island, the largest South Shetland Island, is the gateway to Antarctica, with over 10 nations having year-round or summer-only scientific research stations. The island is home to diverse wildlife, including Adelie, Chinstrap, Gentoo Penguins, Weddell, and leopard seals, and skuas and southern giant petrels. Named after King George III, the island has been claimed by Chile and Argentina, but remains part of British Antarctic Territory. The warm climate attracts a large bird population.
Antarctica is a remote, extreme, and enchanting wilderness, with the Antarctic Sound being one of the first encounters. Named after the first ship to cross the Larsen Ice Shelf in 1902, the Sound is a sensory assault of iceberg slabs. Visitors can witness the extraordinary birdlife, Gentoo penguins, and cape petrels, and learn photography skills to capture the continent's unrestrained beauty.
The Antarctic Peninsula, located 620 miles from Tierra del Fuego, offers a glimpse into Earth's least-explored continent, known for its snow-blanked landscapes and colossal ice sculptures. Unseen by humans until 1820, the peninsula is home to research bases studying its unique landscape, wildlife, and human impact. Visitors can witness icebergs, glaciers, and pristine mountain peaks, while also observing Adelie penguin pairs.
South Shetland Islands are known for its unique natural beauty, including volcanic features, historic sites, and abundant wildlife, making it a popular destination for those interested in exploring the pristine and remote environment of the Antarctic.
Return to King George Island, where your charter flight will be waiting to return you back to Punta Arenas.
