Today, your ship will navigate the Drake Passage, leading you from the southernmost region of the Americas to the Antarctic Peninsula. While the waterway is infamous for its challenging navigation, this is not always the case, and many in fact experience what is known as the 'Drake Lake', a calm and tranquil channel. The meeting of warm and cold waters here creates an environment that attracts extraordinary wildlife. Humpback whales, dolphins, and many seabirds including petrels, skuas and gulls frequent these waters. 

As your ship emerges from the Drake Passage, you notice the scenery unfold before you, the icy peaks of the South Shetland Islands now on display. You have completed the rite of passage to explore the 7th continent.

Today, you will cross the Antarctic Circle depending on ice and weather conditions. Each day is a new adventure filled with a sense of exploration. Your expedition team and captain will determine the best spots on the peninsula for zodiac cruises and shore landings. Nicknamed the White Continent, Antarctica is filled with icebergs, snow and glaciers, and each landing offers its own unique landscape and possible wildlife sightings.

For the next few days, you will continue exploring the beauty of the Antarctic Peninsula, visiting sites such as Beak Island, Brown Buff, Cierva Cove, Hidden Bay, and many more.

Part of the greater Antarctica region, the South Shetland Islands are home to an array of wildlife, plenty of scenic landscapes and the opportunity for hikes to amazing viewpoints. You will hopefully be able to land on Elephant Island, the same path the famous explorer Ernest Shackleton took. Deception Island is also another possible landing site, a rugged, volcanic relic of a once thriving whaling community, you'll find heated springs and striking black sand on this caldera as well as plenty of Gentoo penguins.
