James Levelle
James’ film career began in 2007 when the international NGO Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) sent him to document child labour in India’s cotton fields and then to war-torn West Africa to capture deadly pirate fishing off the coast of Sierra Leone. He went on to direct the acclaimed Eco Crime Investigators series for National Geographic, going undercover in China and Tibet to expose the criminal trade in tiger skins and bones and later tackling the multi-million-pound illegal logging industry in Southeast Asia.
Since then, James has worked in some of the world’s most extreme environments, directing and presenting some of adventure TV’s most groundbreaking and successful shows. He hitchhiked 6,000 miles across South America with no mobile phone, credit card, or cash for Discovery Channel’s six-part series Free Ride. He trekked through the frozen wilds of Alaska for Discovery’s hit series Gold Rush Trail and risked life and limb chasing hurricanes for UKTV & BBC's Hurricane Man.
James will present five special lectures during our voyage, discussing his work on Free Ride, Race for the Future, Alaska Gold Rush Trail, and Eco Crime Investigators. A charismatic presenter, James will be a fantastic addition to our range of lectures onboard. As Times journalist Hilary Rose puts it, James is "a nice bloke… however, he is mad!"
