When Do You Want To Go?
This epic voyage aims to travel deep south where few have ever been, across the Antarctic Circle. The extra days in Antarctica allow for deeper discovery of the frozen continent and to witness the spectacles of Mother Nature at her finest. Keep watch for humpback whales breaching, leopard seals hunting, and stand on the Antarctic ice to observe young penguin chicks fledging.
Day 1: Ushuaia, the End of the World
Day 2 – 3: Drake Passage
Day 4 – 9: The Antarctic Peninsula
Day 10 – 11: The Drake Passage
Day 12 – Ushuaia
Arriving at the “end of the world,” spend time enjoying the relaxed ambience of Ushuaia. The main street is lined with lots of restaurants and inviting cafes, unique shops selling a range of goods, from penguin related goodies through to specialist outdoor expedition & trekking equipment – ideal for getting any last-minute essentials before your voyage. Late afternoon you will board the vessel and set sail through the Beagle Channel en-route to the Great White Continent.
Over the next few days, you will follow in the path of the great historical polar pioneers. As you sail across the Drake Passage, you may spot many varieties of albatross (including the fabled wandering albatross) following the ship’s wake. These incredible birds dynamically soar for thousands of miles, scarcely flapping their wings.
Keep watch for the possibility of spotting majestic fin whales or a pod of hourglass dolphins. While sailing the Drake Passage, enjoy the many presentations onboard offered by your expert guiding team, and enjoy the free time to relax, unwind & meet your fellow explorers.
At the height of the Antarctic summer, opportunities for exploration and wildlife interaction are endless. This voyage aims to push deeper south and cross the rarely-visited Antarctic Circle – making landings in small Zodiac boats to discover wildly remote locations. During your time in Antarctica, the Captain and Expedition Leader will create a unique itinerary based on the local weather, wildlife and ice conditions. Possible locations may include the stark volcanic Deception Island, mountainous Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay. Perhaps visit the abandoned British research station of Detaille Island, or discover one of the southernmost colonies of Adélie penguins in the Fish Islands, and spot crabeater and Leopard seals at the Melchior Islands.
Each day In Antarctica will surely create unforgettable memories – words can not begin to explain the beautiful majesty and pristine scenery of this icy world. You will see shimmering icebergs and enormous glaciers, with their crevasses alight with the bluest of hues. Stand on the continent amongst vast penguin colonies, and witness penguin chicks making their first steps into the crystal-clear waters, hoping to avoid predatory Leopard seals.
Keep watch for Antarctica’s largest marine mammals, the humpback and minke whale, drawn to the millions of tons of krill which enrich the waters. For the more adventurous, Oceanwide also offer additional opportunities to camp out for a night in Antarctica, kayak or even dive in the iceberg-filled waters – please enquire with a Polar Routes specialist for more details.
As the ship heads northbound, you will enjoy time out on deck spotting the numerous seabirds and marine wildlife. The time at sea presents an opportunity to reflect on an incredible voyage, to relax and to share stories with newfound friends. The expedition team will offer a variety of fascinating presentations, recapping the highlights of this incredible adventure.
All great adventures must sadly come to an end, and you disembark in Ushuaia following a fond farewell from the expedition team and crew. You return to civilisation feeling rejuvenated, with memories & stories to last a lifetime.
