Classic Arctic In Depth

At around 11 days in length, this voyage of discovery through the frozen Arctic is perfect for those who want to delve a little deeper into the wilderness. Experience all of the richness the archipelago has to offer: impressive history and geography, breath-taking views, and extraordinary wildlife.

  • Spot polar bears and whales from the deck of your ship
  • Cruise through breath-taking fjords and marvel at immense glaciers
  • See the midnight sun

Day 1: Longyearbyen

Get your first glimpse of the midnight sun in Longyearbyen, capital of Spitsbergen, and transfer from the city to your ship for a late afternoon embarkation.

Days 2–10: Spitsbergen

Spend the next nine days exploring the remote polar regions. Your time on board is planned to take advantage of local ice and weather conditions so each day will be different. Svalbard is one of the few places on the planet to offer such a plethora of natural and historical extravaganzas so no matter where your captain chooses to aim for, you’re guaranteed and incredible time.

Our goal is to give you the best possible opportunity to see wildlife in and around the Svalbard archipelago. Ice conditions sometimes allow for sailing through the Hinlopenstretet towards the east coast of Spitsbergen, then through Freemansundet towards the south. However, as we enter the realm of Mother Nature, this is always subject to conditions.

Visit ice-sculpted fjords with breath-taking mountain scenery and spend time exploring pack ice edges in search of polar bears as they hunt seals.  At one or more of the stops, it will be possible to see Svalbard's arctic fox and the region's unique reindeer. Watch glaciers crashing into the sea and walruses lazing on their remnants – this is nature in its truest and most raw form.

Early season voyages often provide the best opportunity to see large ice floes in the Arctic pack ice, which usually means excellent wildlife viewing directly from the ship. Later in the season once the ice has melted, it will be possible to cover more territory, which may allow the chance to explore the entire archipelago. This can lead into the less-explored regions of Nordaustlandet and Kvitøya, or the continental edges where large whales are attracted by nutrient rich upwellings.

Day 11: Longyearbyen
